Job Description

HOURS: Full-time, non-exempt at 40 hours per week with flexible scheduling. Set schedule preferred.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports directly to Director of Adult Education

 

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: The Literacy Coalition of Central Texas is a medium-sized, dynamic, quickly growing non-profit organization in Austin, Texas. The Literacy Coalition improves the quality and availability of literacy services and interventions in Central Texas. We support, coordinate and offer literacy programs outside the public K-12 educational system, including adult literacy, GED classes, English language instruction for adults, family and early childhood literacy programs, and specialized literacy training for health literacy, computer literacy and financial literacy. The Coalition creates a more literate Central Texas by providing the resources necessary to address this underfunded network of vital programs. ENGLISH @ WORK merged and became an official program of the Literacy Coalition in January 2014.

The core strategy of the organization is to embed its high-quality, proven programming in the business, education, government and nonprofit sectors. Programs and services are designed to deepen the impact of local service providers, strengthen the business workforce, and build stronger communities.While there are 70 organizations in Central Texas working to improve the skills of individuals, the Literacy Coalition alone is working to coordinate, strengthen and grow our community’s literacy services system so that we can reverse the increasing trend of illiteracy.

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE/FUNCTION OF POSITION:  The Social Services Coordinator will support the effective delivery of a support services to adult English language and limited literacy learners. The provision of social services support is This position will oversee the coordination of service provision across locations to improve efficiency of service provision, ensure compliance on relevant grants and contracts by planning for and managing project timelines, reporting on program progress, overseeing the efficient use of resources, and facilitate appropriate communication between staff, students and partners. This unique role will work to ensure the success of the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas’ efforts to expand assistance and support to adult clients in programs across the organization. At the Literacy Coalition’s Learning Center, the Social Services Coordinator will work with the Learning Center Manager to monitor program progress of students from intake to completion and follow-up within adult education programs. This position will also assist with outreach efforts for The Learning Center. The Social Services coordinator will work with the Director of Adult Education and Quality Assurance Coordinator to build data management and service tracking systems to monitor compliance and report outcomes. The Social Services Coordinator will also work with the Director of Adult Education in developing and sustaining proactive communication channels with partner agencies, funders, AmeriCorps members, clients, vocational training partners, and other key stakeholders to ensure the success of this initiative. The Coordinator must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with client population and with diverse perspectives and roles. This position works with moderate supervision.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Student Support Services:

o Evaluate students’ needs for emergency assistance and make requests for approval

o Provide appropriate community referrals to students and clients

o Provide ongoing case management and follow up

o Maintain regular contact with instructors regarding participant progress and/or issues

o Design and implement new empowerment sessions and group presentations for students enrolled in LCCT programs

o Regularly meet with students regarding progress towards goals and to identify and problem-solve around potential roadblocks

o Designs and implements new mobile support services for students of off-site LCCT programs

o Develop and implement Student Retention Committee

o Consults with direct services program staff (The Learning Center, E@W and PALS) to determine additional student support service needs and referrals

o Consults with program staff on behavioral concerns and resource referrals for students enrolled in LCCT programs

o Create contracts with TLC participants who are noncompliant and terminate participants as necessary

o With TLC Manager, monitor participant attendance, progress, adherence to classroom rules, schedule conflicts and other pertinent issues

o Assist in maintaining records of services provided

o Provide crisis intervention services to students and other clients as needed

o Provide information and direct victim services to students who self-identify as victims of violent crime

o Design and implement student support groups

o Provide trauma informed therapy to adult students or other clients who identify as victims of violent crime

o Perform psycho-social assessments at various points in the life of the case i.e. initial meeting, follow up appointments

o Provide short term and long term trauma informed therapy services for adult students and other clients who identify as victims of violent crime

o Assess and diagnose therapy clients

o Assess therapeutic needs of therapy clients

o Provide individualized treatment plans for therapy clients

o Maintain a client log and progress notes for therapy clients

o Participate in external clinical supervision to review client treatment goals and objectives

 

Grant Management and Reporting:

o Ensure adequate documentation all activities funded by contracts and grants and complete regular reports on all activities

o Keep detailed records of clients represented by each grant. Make sure that their papers are being filed and the appropriate information is being entered into the student database

o Communicate regularly with Director of Adult Education regarding reporting processes, deadlines and performance numbers

 

Participant Intake:

o Conduct motivational interview with students at intake

o Assist in conducting orientation for prospective TLC participants

o May assist with verifying intake paperwork for prospective participants on testing days

o Refer testers that do not qualify to other community agencies

o Schedule new participants to start classes

o Keep Student Handbook and Resource Guide current and review, including classroom rules and policies, with each new participant during their first week

 

Outreach:

o Network with community based agencies and businesses to satisfy client wraparound service needs and empowerment classes

o Attend various community meetings as a representative of LCCT

o Participate in community outreach activities such as speaking engagements, publication of newspaper articles, and fund raising events

o Develop and present trainings on victims services offered by LCCT both internally to staff and externally to community groups

 

Additional Responsibilities:

o Attend Coalition monthly staff meetings

o Assist in volunteer recruiting and training efforts

o Participate in training to enhance professional skills and development

o Cultivate a strengths-based approach in your own work and in interactions with members, colleagues, and other stakeholders

o Embody the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas’ values of Professionalism, Authenticity, Collaborative Community, Thoughtful Innovation, and Social Impact and utilize said values in decision-making

o Responsible for other duties as assigned

 

REQUIRED SKILLS:

 Master’s degree in Social Work or related field

 Minimum two years’ experience providing direct service in human services field

 Experience coordinating projects, preparing correspondence, producing written reports and proposals, making public presentations, and facilitating planning meetings

 High level of organization to ensure that all program documentation is in place and partner host sites are effective, supportive and compliant with program policies and funding requirements

 Excellent interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach to working with a wide range of people both inside and outside the organization as an energetic team player

 Ability to travel throughout Austin area

 Demonstrated success managing multiple projects simultaneously, with the ability to prioritize and complete tasks in an efficient manner

 Demonstrated ability to work with a team, including those with diverse perspectives and roles

 Ability to maintain confidentiality and to understand and explain complex information to clients

 Self-starter who initiates and pursues objectives in an organized and efficient manner, and has the ability to work independently

 Willingness to work some evening and weekend hours during certain times of the program year

 Proficient with technology including Microsoft Word, Excel, and preferably online databases

 Comfortable with/Experienced in:

o Knowledge of community agencies and resources

o Skilled in culturally competent practice and ease in diverse social settings

 

PREFERRED:

 Skills in staff and volunteer supervision

 Minimum three years’ experience providing service to vulnerable populations in the adult education or job-readiness, employment-related fields

 Bilingual English-Spanish

 Proficiency with Salesforce
