Job Description
HOURS: Full-time, grant-funded, non-exempt at 40 hours per week with flexible scheduling. Set schedule preferred.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports directly to Director of Instructional Quality
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: The Literacy Coalition of Central Texas is a medium-sized, dynamic, quickly growing non-profit organization in Austin, Texas. The Literacy Coalition improves the quality and availability of literacy services and interventions in Central Texas. We support, coordinate and offer literacy programs outside the public K-12 educational system, including adult literacy, GED classes, English language instruction for adults, family and early childhood literacy programs, and specialized literacy training for health literacy, computer literacy and financial literacy. The Coalition creates a more literate Central Texas by providing the resources necessary to address this underfunded network of vital programs.

The core strategy of the organization is to embed its high-quality, proven programming in the business, education, government and nonprofit sectors. Programs and services are designed to deepen the impact of local service providers, strengthen the business workforce, and build stronger communities.
While there are 70 organizations in Central Texas working to improve the skills of individuals, the Literacy Coalition alone is working to coordinate, strengthen and grow our community’s literacy services system so that we can reverse the increasing trend of illiteracy.
PRIMARY PURPOSE/FUNCTION OF POSITION: The Adult Education Support Specialist will be responsible for coordinating with vocational training partners to identify curricular needs, participating in the development of ESL and Basic Literacy curriculum contextualized for specific vocational training tracks, and participating in the development and implementation of training for adult education instructors. This unique role is cross-cutting and supports several Literacy Coalition initiatives: the Literacy Coalition’s PILOT initiative (Partners Integrating Literacy and Occupational Training) designed to align adult education, workforce training, and wraparound services to increase access to middle-skilled careers in high-demand occupations; Literacy Forward, a program that provides training, curricula, classroom resources, and other support to instructors in ESL and Basic Literacy classrooms in Central Texas; English Forward, the Literacy Coalition’s national earned income venture to help adult education programs around the country adopt the training, curricula, and other resources available through English Forward; and English@Work, the Literacy Coalition’s workplace ESL program. This position works directly with the Director of Instructional Quality and other relevant staff and consultants to assist in the development, implementation, and improvement of projects to further the mission of each of these initiatives.
  • Develop and refine instructional program resources for ESL and Basic Literacy classrooms including but not limited to lesson plans, classroom supplemental materials, syllabi, and teacher training materials.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of curricula, resources, tools, and activities, and adjust implementation as necessary.
  • Keep abreast of best practices and research in adult education, vocational training, and literacy acquisition, incorporate relevant information into curriculum and training materials, and disseminate to relevant stakeholders.
  • Serve as a Literacy Forward master trainer.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with partner vocational program operating sites, including ongoing communication, support and relationship building for curriculum and training development purposes.
  • Coordinate with all relevant internal team members to ensure proactive communication and coordination of all aspects of the various initiatives.
  • Work directly with the Director of Instructional Quality to assist in planning, development, and implementation of curriculum and training to constantly improve program quality, innovation and accountability. 
  • Cultivate a strengths-based approach in your own work and in interactions with members, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
  • Embody the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas’ values of Professionalism, Authenticity, Collaborative Community, Thoughtful Innovation, and Social Impact and utilize said values in decision-making.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum two years’ experience providing ESL and adult basic literacy instruction
  • Bachelor’s degree in applied linguistics, education, or related field.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and demonstrated experience applying theory to ensure quality program implementation.
  • Demonstrated competency in creating lesson plans and course materials.
  • Experience leading meetings, and designing and facilitating trainings, workshops, and professional development.
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple projects simultaneously, with the ability to prioritize and complete tasks in an efficient manner and manage a complex schedule.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Central Texas literacy community, organizations, and leaders.
  • High level of organization to ensure that all program documentation is in place and partner host sites are effective, supportive and compliant with program policies and funding requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach to working with a wide range of people both inside and outside the organization as an energetic team player.
  • Self-starter who initiates and pursues objectives in an organized and efficient manner, and has the ability to work independently.
  • Willingness to work some evening and weekend hours during certain times of the program year.
  • Comfortable with technology including Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with content and learner management systems and facilitating online webinars.
  • Three years’ experience providing ESL and adult basic literacy instruction, with an emphasis on employment-related content.
  • Master’s degree in applied linguistics, education or related field.
  • Experience with the Literacy Coalition’s English Forward and Basic Literacy Forward training systems and resources.
  • Experience in adult education and workforce development sectors, particularly in Integrated Education & Training (IET) models of service delivery.

Note: This is a grant-funded position, with funding anticipated through December 2018. Continuation of this position past December 2018 is contingent upon securing additional funding, which we will work to secure.
