Job Description

Mission of Seedling

Seedling’s Board of Directors is looking for a passionate leader to join us in changing young lives.  Since its inception in 2006 Seedling’s Mentor Program has become the organization’s primary program supporting children challenged by parental incarceration.  It is widely acknowledged as a mentor program that is research-driven, staffed by outstanding and competent professionals, and that demonstrates significant outcomes.  

The success and growth of the program requires a mission-driven, strategic leader to develop and lead a successful multi-channel development plan to take Seedling to the next level.   The Executive Director shall be the face of the organization in the community championing the mission and building and nurturing strong partnerships with corporations, foundations and philanthropic individuals.  The ED will inspire and lead an organization of a highly-skilled and experienced staff with demonstrated passion for the mission, and work collaboratively with the Board to scale Seedling in development, programming, branding and marketing. 

The Executive Director position: 
  • Reports to an 18-member Board of Directors
  • Manages internal staff, contractors and vendors required to run the organization
  • Oversees a budget of just under $1,000,000

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the face of the organization to the community and champion its mission 
  • Implement Seedling’s strategic plan to ensure consistent progress towards goals and objectives
  • Lead a successful fundraising strategy that contributes to Seedling’s success by growing the foundation through individual and corporate donations and successfully securing government, foundation and corporate grants 
  • Build, support and challenge a dedicated, engaged team through inspirational, inclusive leadership  
  • Communicate transparently with stakeholders, donors and collaborators
  • Ensure maintenance of official records and documents, including but not limited to federal, state, and local regulations and funder requirements and reporting
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant trends and developments in the field of youth mentoring
  • Be responsible for applying and maintaining sound and ethical financial practices
  • Manage resources effectively to ensure Seedling’s capacity to carry out its work
  • Provide leadership in developing program, organizational, and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff
  • Implement all plans and policies authorized by the Board of Directors
  • Bachelor’s Degree required and advanced degree preferred
  • 7 years of experience in non-profit management
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and support multi-channel fund-raising efforts in order to fund growth of organization
  • Demonstrated servant-leadership, including the skills necessary to lead an organization through an executive level change
  • Innovative and entrepreneurial approach to organizational planning and leadership
  • Demonstrated understanding of the culture and operations of public school education, especially in Central Texas,  is highly preferred
  • Strong communication skills for both planned communications and ad hoc discussions, for one-on-one meetings and presentation questions and answers
  • Board and Committee development skills including: leading, inspiring, guiding the Board in their member and leadership roles to increase their effectiveness
  • Track record of success with volunteer recruitment and management
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and commitment to transparent communication
  • Knowledge of Texas non-profit laws, regulations, and reporting requirements.  Knowledge of federal and state employment law is a plus.
  • Familiarity with federal and state employment law
  • Familiarity small business accounting software
  • Local candidates preferred

Compensation & Benefits   

  • Annual salary commensurate with experience
