Job Description

Since its founding in 1985, Communities in Schools of Central Texas (CIS) has become a top performer in a national network of student support organizations. CIS has built a reputation for excellence in financial reporting and audit performance.

By the numbers, CIS has an annual operating budget of about $10 million, serves six school districts, and helps over 50,000 individuals every year. The organization has 150 staff members and more than 600 volunteers, all working toward the common goal of empowering students for a lifetime of success.

In school year 2015-2016, 99% of the students served by CIS completed the school year – an impressive statistic and an even more impressive impact on the thousands of young people and families touched by CIS’s programs.

These include:

  • CIS evidence-based model delivered with fidelity on 63 public school campuses
  • ASPIRE – works with preschoolers and their families in a multi-generational family literacy program
  • Care Coordination – wraparound services for elementary and middle schoolers and their families
  • Pebble Project – anti-child abuse program targeting elementary school
  • SmartKids – works with housing authorities to reach and help kids living in public housing
  • XY Zone – youth development program targeteting at-risk high school males

Position summary

The Chief Finance Officer (CFO) is responsible for all financial matters of Communities In Schools of Central Texas and works in conjunction with the Chief Operations Officer to develop and implement financial strategies across the organization. The CFO serves as the staff liaison to the Finance and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors, makes presentations to the Finance Committee, and is a member of the senior leadership team.

The Chief Finance Officer:

  • manages the financial operations of a $10 million budget with functional responsibility over accounting activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, payroll, grants administration, audits, and financial modeling;
  • is responsible for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the financial information of the organization;
  • ensures the organization has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation, receive audits with an unqualified opinion, and funder monitoring with no disallowed costs or chargebacks;
  • works closely with program leaders to explore how the finance function can support program operations; and
  • partners with executive staff including the Chief Human Resources Officer and Director of Information Technology to facilitate the appropriate integration of the finance, HR, and IT functions.
Experience, education, and executive skill requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance, or related field
  • Master’s degree or CPA is preferred
  • At least five years’ experience as CFO or Controller, preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $10 million
  • Experience in a senior financial management role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of proactive financial management strategies
  • Significant experience in or advanced knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Office of Management and Budget Super Circular
  • Experience working with information technology staff to manage finance and accounting software applications
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills
  • Ability to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented position
